Many emotions run through your mind when you lose someone close to you. Trying to process these emotions can be challenging, and having a healthy outlet is vital in the time after. SammyCin laid his broken heart onto his 3-song EP, “SADBOY SAMMY.” The first song, “Sunken Place,” has a piano melody paired with trap elements to portray the sadness and anxiety one feels after a loss. His lyrics resemble the questions racing through his mind as he searches for answers. At times, he feels better off alone, cautious of those around him as they may betray him. In the middle track, “Hide,” Sammy reveals that hiding behind a fake smile is no longer working. Attempting to be perfect can be exhausting, and putting effort into people who don’t deserve it, is draining. He wants to stay true to his purpose, and even if that means he may fail, at least he knows he lived his life honestly. As time carries you through the project, the hurt in his voice is still present, but you can also pick up on more and more self-reassurance as he processes his emotions. In the closing track, “When I’m Older,” the Piano melody alongside the drums reminds me of the morning after a stormy night. The scene outside is not perfect, someone who weathered the storm may not be the same person they were the day before, but it comes to a point where you have to pick up and keep going with your life. While his lyrics may hint that he feels like ending it now, it was an important enough touch to repeat in the chorus, “Maybe I’ll understand when I’m older,” to reassure himself he has the strength to keep pushing. There is a hole in his heart, and there always will be, but he has something in life calling his name for a bigger purpose. Sammy will never forget his father, and with his passing, he will continue to live a life that would have made him proud.
