Some artists put a lot of thought into their artist name; some go with the first one that comes to mind. Can you tell the reader how you landed on yours?
My name is Eddie James. I could have put “young” something, “little” something, “lil” something, but Eddie James is me. A lot of people create creative names and things like that to mask who they are, but when you listen to my music, you are listening to me.
Did you have a goal when starting music? Is it the same goal you have today?
Initially, I had these milestones that I needed to hit. Things like performing at the Miramar. Then I sold out the Miramar. Performing at Landmark Lanes, and then proceeded to sell out Landmark Lanes. Things like performing at the Cactus Club, then selling out the Cactus Club, all the way up until getting on the radio, and I’ve done that multiple times as well.
Do you have any passions or hobbies outside of music?
A few hobbies and passions that I have outside of music are things like fishing, being with my children, and trying to be the best father that I can be. Fixing my car, trying to tune it up, and getting the best possible output, things like that.
Looking 5 years out, where do you want your music to lead you?
I’m currently on the road to 1 million streams. It’s currently sitting at 716k. In five years, I plan on seeing myself in Rolling Stone magazine, being featured on things like No Jumper, Elevator, etc.
Thinking back to your youth, what kind of music did you hear playing around you? And how do you think these artists impacted the music you create?
When I was growing up I was a very diverse musical enthusiast, so things that I listen to consisted of Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, OJ da Juiceman, but then they switch up to Fall Out Boy, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Kid Cudi, all the way to Future, Nav, and Travis Scott. These people have had a significant impact on my career. Now, when you listen to my music, you hear sounds to the degree of Future, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, and Kanye West.
If you were gifted one free feature from any artist currently alive, who would you want to collaborate on a track with?
If I collab with anybody right now, it would be Future. His impact on the music has been monumental. He has an immaculate beat selection, and his flows are unmatched.
Lately, what has been your motivation to keep making music?
Lately, my motivation to push my music has been my children. Without them, I would not have any reason or meaning to be here or put this content out here for you guys. So if you guys rock with my music, don’t thank me, thank my kids.
